Champion Update: Mehen
Posted in Idle Champions.

Mehen is a tall, powerful dragonborn with dull-ocher scales and a blunt attitude. With strong opinions on the right course of action, he is just as comfortable yelling orders on the battlefield as he is fiercely protecting his daughters. Despite a life thrown into turmoil after being exiled from his clan and attempting to raise twin tieflings, Mehen remains resilient in his sense of self and his abilities with a falchion.
Verthisathurgiesh Mehen has been greatly reworked with this update. He is no less grumpy, but he should now be much easier to use -- assuming you can find the perfect spot for him in your formation!

  • Gruff - Mehen increases Gold Find of the formation by 100% for every stack of Grumpy that he has, stacking multiplicatively.
  • Expose Weakness - When a Champion adjacent to Mehen applies a stun, knockback, slow, or root, the enemy takes 1000% more damage for 10 seconds. If Farideh is adjacent to Mehen, she prioritizes attacking those enemies. This debuff does not stack, but the duration is extended if it applies again before it expires.

    Idle Champion Spotlight: Umberto Thornheart
    Posted in Idle Champions.

"I have solved more cases than you have years in this world, I have faced more villains than you could dream of, and I am here to find this murderer and stop them before they kill again.”

When tragedy strikes and a mystery unfolds, there's no better investigator on the Sword Coast than Umberto Thornheart. He finds joy in detecting clues, and is an expert at solving even the most dastardly of puzzles!

    I. Umberto

Dungeons & Dragons Umberto Created by Gail Somone

Umberto Thornheart is the orphaned child of two infamous thieves, and saw his parents executed for their crimes. Rather than live on the streets, he was taken in by the very detective who arrested his parents, and eventually became a detective himself, hoping to protect the innocent and (perhaps) reform the guilty.

Umberto Thornheart is a Tanking, Support, and Debuff Champion who employs his detective prowess to aid his allies. He was created by award-winning writer Gail Simone, who you may recognize from her work for DC, Marvel, WB, and many more! She has an extensive history crafting thrilling and emotional stories for a variety of comics, and we're thrilled to work with her to create this new Champion!

Check out our Champion Spotlight Video embedded below for a quick overview of Umberto's abilities, and read on to get all of the details!

    II. Umberto's Stats

    Race: Human Alignment: Lawful Good

    Seat: 7 (Minsc)

    Dungeons & Dragons Umberto

    III. Umberto's Abilities

    Basic Attack

Umberto has two attacks. A magic attack when he is in human form, and a Bear melee attack when he is in his ultimate Bear form.

    • Swarmstaff - Umberto magically unleashes a small swarm of angry bees at the nearest foe, dealing 1 hit. If Beehive Barrage is unlocked, this adds one swarming bee to the enemy after Umberto's damage is applied.
    • Bear Claw - Umberto moves up to the nearest foe and slashes them, dealing 1 ultimate hit.

    Formation Abilities

    • Detective's Entourage - Umberto increases the damage of all Champions in the two columns behind him by 100%.
    • Beehive Barrage - Every second, Umberto's staff spawns a swarming bee, which buzzes around the staff, up to a maximum of 10 swarming bees. When an enemy attacks Umberto, he unleashes a swarming bee from the staff (if one exists) onto that enemy. When an enemy with one or more swarming bees is hit by any Champion, all their bees stings them, dealing 1 second of BUD-based damage for each bee. A maximum of 5 swarming bees can swarm a single enemy. Bees persist until the enemy is defeated, or until Umberto is removed from the formation.
    • Ongoing Investigation - Pick an Investigation to pursue. Umberto gains stacks of Clue, and can start another Investigation after the Investigation concludes. Each Clue stack increases Detective's Entourage by 50%, stacking multiplicatively. Caps at 100 stacks. Once you are capped, additional Investigations are not offered. Clue stacks persist between areas and reset when the adventure ends.
      • Rapid Reconnaissance: 2 hour duration, 10 stacks are awarded right away, but all but 1 are removed when the investigation ends (1 total)
      • Steadfast Search: 8 hour duration, 1 stack awarded after every 2 hours, plus 2 stacks when the investigation ends (6 total)
      • Thorough Inquiry: 24 hour duration, 1 stack awarded after every 3 hours, plus 16 stacks when the investigation ends (24 total)
    • Protective Presence - Umberto increases the health of all other Champions by 25% of his max health, and any healing effect on those Champions is increased by 25%.

    Specializations

    First Specialization

    • Law's Alliance - Umberto increases the effect of Detective's Entourage by 125% for each Lawful Champion in the formation, stacking multiplicatively.
    • Family of Orphans - Umberto increases the effect of Detective's Entourage by 100% for each unaffiliated Champion in the formation, stacking multiplicatively.
    • Call of the Wardens - Umberto increases the effect of Detective's Entourage by 300% for each Ranger or Druid Champion in the formation, stacking multiplicatively.

    Second Specialization

    • More Bees - Umberto's Beehive Barrage increases the number of swarming bees spawned each second by 400% (to 5/sec), and when an enemy hits Umberto the maximum number of bees (if available) are unleashed. Finally, the damage per bee is increased by 100%.
    • More Clues - Umberto increases the maximum number of Ongoing Investigation's Clue stacks by 50%.
    • More Damage - Increase the effect of Detective's Entourage by 200%.

    Ultimate Ability

    • Brown Bear Bash - Umberto transforms into a bear for 15 seconds, resetting the base attack cooldown of all Champions in the formation. For the duration, Umberto's base attack changes to Bear Claw and the attack cooldown of all Champions in the formation is reduced by 2 seconds, causing them to attack more often.

    COTLI: Song of Thrones 6!

Click...click...click...from out of the depths of the mountain cave scurries your newest Crusader friend.

A Song of Thrones 6 has arrived, bringing with it the hard worker, Zuczek the Fire-Blooded.

This year's event runs until Tuesday, July 27th at 12:00 PM Pacific Time (UTC -7), introducing Zuczek the Fire-Blooded and bringing back Imani Saskien, Holddoor, The Wolf King, RoboQueen, Zombie Winter, Leerion, the Royal Dwarf, and Brogon, Prince of Dragons!

New Tier 6 Crusader: Zuczek the Fire-Blooded

Tags: Event, Female, Animal, Support, Supernatural, Good

Deep down in the mountainside, where no human was supposed to have been able to reach, Zuczek and her hive lived. A harmless worker drone, Zuczek was off gathering supplies when the slaughter happened. She felt the deaths through the hivemind as one by one her fellows were killed. She rushed back, her anxiousness making her claws slip and slide on the stone as she scurried along.

Zuczek burst into the entrance of the home cave and managed to glimpse a view of a man-like figure just before the cavern erupted with a burst of light which knocked her out. When she woke up, her worker's body was now covered in a warrior's carapace and a new fire flooded her veins - a fire for revenge. Whatever miracle had saved her life was bittersweet, but if she transformed once, maybe in time she could change again. She tidied up what remained of the corpses of her family into the burial chamber, and then left the cave for good, looking for the creature that did this to them.

By joining your crusaders on their travels, she hopes to one day find her nemesis.

Zuczek the Fire-Blooded is a Support Crusader. When you want to add her to your formation, you can find them in slot 37.

Idle Champions: The Great Modron March 4
    Posted in Idle Champions.

A modron sighting is a rare occurrence outside Mechanus, the plane of true law.

At least, it's supposed to be a rare occurrence -- word has it that thousands of modrons have been seen on the march in the wilderness, and they are heading towards Waterdeep!

The Great Modron March 4 introduces Mehen, Dragonborn Fighter and adoptive father of Farideh and Havilar of Brimstone Angels, and brings back Jaheira, the renowned half-elf druid from Baldur's Gate, Qillek Ad Khollar, the Aarakocra Cleric of High Rollers. Players have until Monday, May 31st at 12PM Pacific to complete their The Great Modron March 4 unlocks and objectives.

For more information about Year 4 Events and how they work, please check out our Year 4 Events Dev Blog.

    I. New Champion: Mehen

    Dungeons & Dragons Verthisathurgiesh Mehen

Mehen is a tall, powerful dragonborn with dull-ocher scales and a blunt attitude. With strong opinions on the right course of action, he is just as comfortable yelling orders on the battlefield as he is fiercely protecting his daughters. Despite a life thrown into turmoil after being exiled from his clan and attempting to raise twin tieflings, Mehen remains resilient in his sense of self and his abilities with a falchion.

Mehen is both Grumpy and Gruff and uses those qualities to buff and bolster his allies, especially if those party members include Farideh and Havilar. When you want to add him to your formation, you can swap him with Nayeli (Slot 3).

    II. Mehen’s Stats

    Race: Dragonborn Alignment: Neutral Good
    Class: Fighter Gender: Male
    Age: 48 Affiliation: Brimstone Angels

    STR: 19 DEX: 8 CON: 15
    INT: 13 WIS: 12 CHA: 14

    Role: Support & Gold Find
Eligible for Patrons: Mirt the Moneylender, Vajra Safahr, Strahd von Zarovich, Zariel
    Slot: 3 (Nayeli)

    Mehen's Abilities

Mehen is a Support and Gold Find Champion. With the new Brimstone Angels affiliation, he buffs his daughters Farideh and Havilar (and they buff him), while Exiled helps all three find the gold they need to continue their adventures.

Mehen prefers to be towards the back of any formation where he can think tactically about the battle and issue precise orders. Grumpy gives buffs to Champions in front of him, and Gruff boosts this buff based on how far ahead Champion in question is, while We’ve Trained For This increases the amount of gold he’ll collect the further back he’s placed. For more information on Mehen and his abilities, check out his Champion Spotlight!

    Year Four Variants

    • The Elusive Bounty — Mehen is on the hunt for a pixie from the feywild who has been harassing adventurers for years! He starts in the formation. He can be moved or removed. The pixie arrives in each boss area to taunt Mehen, buffing all enemies so they move 100% faster and deal 100% additional damage. You must defeat her in addition to the area requirements to advance.
Getting to know Mehen: To maximize Mehen's benefit within your formation, you'll want to watch his Grumpy stacks and keep them within the middle range.
        • Mehen gains Grumpy stacks based on which column he is in with a gain of 1 stack per second in the front row, to 5 stacks per second in the back row.
        • Mehen loses Grumpy stacks when one of the following things happens to either Mehe, Farideh or Havilar: They attack (10% loss), they take damage (10% loss), or they kill an enemy (5% loss).
    • Reach Area 75.
    • The Neverending March Continues — Every time a Modron is killed in non-boss areas it shuts down for 5 seconds and then comes back to life with full health. Modron enemies deal 100% additional damage.
    • Reach Area 125.
    • Volo's Guide to Grumpy Guys — Volo has returned to observe the formation. Only Male Champions can be used. Enemies move 100% faster, and deal 100% additional damage.
Getting to know Mehen: While Mehen works best with his daughters Farideh & Havilar, he's no slouch on his own. Without the Brimstone Angels in your formation, you need to manage Mehen's Grumpy stacks a bit differently. Remember that changing his column will alter how quickly he is gaining Grumpy stacks.
    • Reach Area 175.
For information on previous years' variants, check out the The Great Modron March 3 blog.

Verthisathurgiesh Mehen is a dragonborn fighter, adoptive father of Havilar and Farideh, and a character from the Brimstone Angels D&D Novel series written by Erin M. Evans. He’ll be bringing his commanding presence to the Champion ranks next week during The Great Modron March!

    III. Mehen's Design

We continue to be blessed to work with Erin M. Evans, and are excited to bring another one of her brilliant characters to life in our game! Mehen’s experience in the Lance Defenders as well as his work as a mercenary and monster hunter make him a formidable warrior, and his power becomes even more bolstered when fighting alongside his daughters. Brimstone Angels stick together and buff Mehen, while Exiled helps all three find the gold they need to continue their adventures.

Mehen prefers to be towards the back of any formation where he can think tactically about the battle and issue precise orders. Gruff gives buffs to Champions in front of him, while We’ve Trained For This increases the amount of gold he’ll collect the further back he’s placed.

    IV. Mehen's Abilities

    Basic Attack

    • Double Strike — Mehen leaps out and attacks a random enemy with his Falchion, swinging down at first and then up with the second swing, scoring a hit each time.

    Formation Abilities

    • Grumpy — Mehen buffs Champions in his column and all columns in front of him based on the number of Grumpy stacks he has. He gains stacks based on the column he is in and loses stacks when himself, Farideh, or Havilar take or receive certain actions. The buff is significantly higher when he is close to 50 stacks (it falls off sharply on either side), and stacks cap at 100.
      • The column position determines the rate at which stacks are added: Front column +1 stack/second, Back column +5 stacks/second, Middle columns are prorated between 1-5 based on the column.
      • Stacks are removed based on the actions of Mehen, Farideh, or Havilar: if any of them attack -10% stacks (once per attack), if any of them take damage -10% stacks (4 seconds of shared cooldown), or if any of them get a kill with a base attack -5% stacks (triggers for each kill).
      • Work to adjust where Mehen, Farideh and Havilar are in your formation to find the best spot to gain stacks as quickly as you’re losing them!
      • This ability is buffed by upgrades, equipment, and feats. Buffs will apply to the post-stack value.
    • Gruff — Mehen increases the effect of his Grumpy buff on Champions based on how many columns ahead of him they are. It is doubled for each column. This ability is buffed by upgrades, equipment, and feats. Buffs to this ability apply to the post-stack value.
    • Exiled — Kills by Farideh, Havilar, or Mehen grant 200% more gold. Buffed by upgrades, equipment, and feats.
    • Brimstone Angels — Increase the effect of Grumpy by 400% if Farideh is in the formation, and a further 400% if Havilar is in the formation. Buffs apply to the pre-stack value, and stack multiplicatively.

    Specializations

    • Cheer Up Pops — Increases the rate at which Grumpy stacks are added by 1 and increases the effect of Grumpy by 400%.
    • We've Trained for This — Increase the effect of Exiled based on how far from the front of the formation Mehen is placed. Effect is increased by 20% for each column, stacking multiplicatively.

    Ultimate Ability

    • Lightning Breath — Mehen leaps forward and breaths a cone of lightning that damages all enemies on the screen. If he damages more than 5 enemies then his Grumpy stacks are set to 50 and he gains and loses stacks at a reduced rate for 30 seconds.

    V. Mehen’s Equipment

    Slot 1: Global DPS
    Slot 2: Global DPS
    Slot 3: Grumpy
    Slot 4: Gruff
    Slot 5: Exiled
    Slot 6: Ultimate Cooldown

    VI. Conclusion

It’s good to have Havilar and Farideh reunited with their father, and we are excited to see Mehen helping his fellow Champions as grumpy dad! COTLI: Song of Thrones 5!

Seasons change and winters pass, as songs begin to fade,
Monsters skulk trying to hide, a hunter to evade,
Thrones forgotten in the past, their legacies betrayed,
A hybrid dragon stalks her prey with justice as her blade.

A Song of Thrones 5 has arrived, bringing with it the hunter of monsters, Imani Saskien. This year's event runs until Tuesday, June 23rd at 12PM Pacific, introducing Imani Saskien and bringing back Holddoor, The Wolf King, RoboQueen, Zombie Winter, Leerion, the Royal Dwarf, and Brogon, Prince of Dragons!

New Tier 5 Crusader: Imani Saskien

Tags: event, female, dragon, human, magical, support

When you wish to hunt monsters, you need an expert to guide you. Imani Saskien has been tracking and slaying monsters her whole life. Thanks to her unique physiology as a half-human and half-dragon mutant hybrid, she is also incredibly well suited to her profession.

Imani's Basic Scouting and Helpful Potions increase the damage of all Crusaders in the formation, while her connection with Special Kin further boosts DPS for each Dragon tag in the formation. If you happen to have Imani adjacent to Gold Find Crusaders, A Fine Reward increases DPS for each one of them, stacking multiplicatively.

There is a 33% chance that any monster spawned is Marked For Death by Imani, becoming poisoned. Monsters that have been poisoned take ten times more damage from DPS and fifty(!) times more damage from Click Damage. The chances of Marked For Death successfully poisoning enemies is increased by 2% for every Magical Crusader in the formation once you unlock Imani's Spell Practice ability.

Finally, Trusty Mount increases DPS for every Animal tag in the formation, stacking additively.

    New Tier 5 Objectives

    • Recruit Imani Saskien | Imani Saskien takes up a slot in the formation. Magical Crusaders in the formation have their upgrades and DPS disabled. Crusaders take damage over time. Healing abilities. Invulnerable Dragon monsters spawn that will instantly kill a Crusader and themselves. When a dragon dies, Imani heals the remainder of the formation to full health. Monsters attack Imani last.
      Reach area 400.

    • Hot Potato Crown | Only Royal Crusaders may be used. Difficulty is increased. Four spots in the formation have random buffs and debuffs; affected formation spots change every 50 areas.
      Reach area 450.

    • Set Dressing | Area quests replaced by the need to find 3 coffee cups. Coffee cups have a much lower drop rate than standard quests.
      Reach area 475.

    • Well-Lit Night Scene | A brazier takes up a slot in the formation. Experience is gained at a fixed rate, and causes Crusaders to deal less damage. Crusaders adjacent to the brazier become exhausted at a slower rate than Crusaders in the dark. The brazier moves every 50 areas.
      Reach area 500.

    • New Show in Town | A minstrel occupies a slot in formation and sings annoying music. Crusaders adjacent to the minstrel are fully disabled; Crusaders two spots away from the minstrel do zero DPS. Your gold bonus is equal to 300% times the number of Crusaders in the formation. Monster difficulty scales slower compared to other Tier 5 event objectives.
      Reach area 525.

    Help! Where’s the Loot?

Equipment for event Crusaders can be found in Silver and Jeweled Thrones Chests, which you can earn from objectives and the free play or buy in the shop. Each non-recruitment objective will drop a chest for its given tier of Crusaders, and free play will drop All Tier chests. Gear for Tier 2, Tier 3, Tier 4 and Tier 5 Crusaders will only appear in All Tier chests once you've unlocked the respective Crusaders. You can select the tier of chest you buy in the shop when you go to purchase chests with real money or event currency.

    What About Older Event Crusaders?

Previously-available Song of Thrones Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3, and Tier 4 Crusaders are once again available to unlock as part of A Song of Thrones 5. For more information about those Crusaders, check out our Event Blogs from previous years:

Players will have until Tuesday, June 23rd at 12PM Pacific to complete A Song of Thrones 5.

    Idle Champion Spotlight: Havilar
    Posted in Idle Champions.

Ever since we introduced Farideh during Highharvestide 2, players have been asking us the same question: where is Havilar?

Not just because Havi is Farideh's twin sister, but because Farideh's damage relies heavily on having additional Tieflings in the formation, and we haven't added another one to the game since.

...until now. It's time for the Havilar Champion Spotlight!

    I. Twin Tiefling Sisters

Havilar's twin sister Farideh has always been 'the smart one' and 'the responsible one'—but that's all right, Havilar is definitely 'the tough one,' 'the funny one' and the 'pretty one' (despite being identical twins). Plus, Havilar has a hellhound! Even if it means she's a sort-of-but-not-quite Chosen of Asmodeus, too, not that anyone asked Havi about that. But he should know her glaive is as good as her right hand, and she can slice a devil just as well as an orc, a zombie, or any other villain!

Havilar is a Tank and Support Champion. She summons four different Imps to buff Champions in different ways. When battling fiends, she gets slower but her buffs grow stronger. When you want to add Havilar to your formation, you can swap her with Tyril (Slot 10).

    II. Havilar's Stats

    Race: Tiefling Alignment: Chaotic Good
    Class: Fighter (Battlemaster) Gender: Female
    Age: 19 Affiliation: none

    STR: 18 DEX: 15 CON: 13
    INT: 9 WIS: 12 CHA: 12

    Eligible for Patrons: Mirt

    III. Havilar's Design

The design of Havilar was a fun conversation with Erin M Evans, who gave us a few criteria to describe Havi in a nutshell:
    • Farideh's sister.
    • More athletic and funny than Farideh.
    • 'The Pretty One'
    • Confident in her physical abilities.
    • Not the highest INT score.
    • Havi gains a pair of imps that she can summon (Mot, Dembo, Olla, and Bosh).
    • She has a Hellhound that she rides.
    • She is athletic and acrobatic.
    • Her glaive is part of her identity.
In addition to these bullet points (and the books) we also had another reference: Erin played as Havilar during the High Rollers show at PAX West last year:

    Havi's intro starts at 4:03!

We opted for a design around Havi's Imps, Mot, Dembo, Olla, and Bosh, who are summoned using her ultimate, Summon Imps/Heroic Sacrifice, as well as her savant-like skill as a Battlemaster Fighter. Depending on which of these Imps are present, Havi's skills are augmented. She has some similarities with Spurt in this respect, because her effectiveness is changed depending on her ultimate usage.

First, while Havi tanks at the front of a formation, she will buff the two rows behind her with Leadership Summit, with the effect of the buff augmented by which Imps are present.

Mot is always summoned when Havilar casts her ultimate, but the second Imp cycles through a preset list in order: Dembo, then Olla, then Bosh; rinse and repeat. These imps have abilities that make sense to be activated in a specific order: clearing trash/farming, fighting at your wall or fighting boss mobs, and then fighting against a boss itself.

    IV. Havilar's Abilities

    Base Attacks

Havilar has her base attack, and her summoned Imps also have their own base attack!
    • Glaive Thrust — Havilar attacks with her glaive, hitting all enemies in a small radius.
    • Fire of Asmodeus — Each summoned Imp attacks a random enemy with a fireball, dealing a large amount of AOE damage.

    Ultimate Ability

Havilar's ultimate attack changes depending on whether or not her Imps are summoned.
    • Summon Imps — Mot and another imp (Dembo, Olla, or Bosh, in that order) are summoned. The Imps attack with Fire of Asmodeus. As soon as the Imps appear, Havilar's ultimate attack is replaced with Heroic Sacrifice (with a 10 second cooldown before it can be used). The Imps stay active until Heroic Sacrifice is used.
    • Heroic Sacrifice — The Summoned Imp that isn't Mot flings itself at the nearest enemy and explodes, dealing massive damage in a large area and slowing all affected enemies. As soon as not-Mot sacrifices itself, Havilar's ultimate attack reverts to Summon Imps with a 20 second cooldown before it can be used, and halfway through that cooldown Mot despawns.

    Formation Abilities

    • Leadership Summit — Havilar increases the damage of all Champions in the two columns behind her by 100%. This ability is augmented by which imps are currently assisting her.

      • Mot: Increases the effect of Leadership Summit by 400% on Tiefling Champions.
      • Dembo: Increases the effect of Leadership Summit by 200%.
      • Olla: Increases the effect of Leadership Summit by 50% for each enemy Havilar is tanking.
      • Bosh: Increases the effect of Leadership Summit by 400% if there are enemy or boss enrage stacks active.
    • Fiendish Resolve — When any Fiend enemies are on-screen, Havilar focuses less on her own attacks and more on buffing the party. Her base attack cooldown is doubled, but the effect of Leadership Summit is increased by 100%. The base attack cooldown increase does not affect her imps if they are summoned. This ability is augmented by which imps are currently assisting her.

      • Mot: Increases the effect of Leadership Summit by 25% per Fiend enemy on-screen (stacking additively and then applying multiplicatively).
      • Dembo: Fiends have a 50% chance of dropping two quest items or counting for two kills when killed.
      • Olla: Fiends take 100% additional damage from ultimate attacks.
      • Bosh: Halve the damage Havilar takes from all attacks and triples the damage of Heroic Sacrifice.
    • Infernal Fortitude — Increase the max health of other Champions in the formation by 25% of her own.
    • Battlemaster — Each time Havilar attacks she increases the damage of all Champions by 10% for each enemy she hit with her attack (stacking additively), up to a max of 20 stacks. This effect lasts for half of Havilar's base attack cooldown, NOT counting the increase from Fiendish Resolve.

    Specializations

    • Speedy Sacrifice — Decrease the amount of time after you sacrifice a summoned imp until you can summon them again.
    • Mastery of Battle — Increase the duration of Battlemaster's effect by 100%.

    Champion Rebalance

Havilar received the following changes as part of an update on October 8th 2021:
    • We've added a new ability - Sister Sister (Havilar)
      • Increase the effect of Leadership Summit by 200% when Farideh is in the formation.

    V. Havilar's Equipment

Dungeons & Dragons Brimstone Angels Havilar

    Slot 1: Global DPS
    Slot 2: Global DPS
    Slot 3: Increases Max Health
    Slot 4: Leadership Summit
    Slot 5: Battlemaster
    Slot 6: Ultimate Damage

    VI. Conclusion

We're really excited to see the Tiefling sisters together in-game, and can't wait to see what kind of new formation options are introduced along with Havi. As always, feel free to send us feedback on via the Idle Champions Subreddit, Steam forum, or the Idle Champions Discord!

Idle Champions: Vizier Familiar & PAX West 2019
    Posted in Idle Champions.

    Greetings, Champions!

We hope your August has been filled with joy and adventures, both inside and outside Idle Champions. It's a very busy month for us here at Codename Entertainment, not just because we continue to work on live servicing our games while half our staff go on holiday, but also because we're gearing up for PAX West.

Wait -- did we mention that we'll be at PAX West again this year? Whoops. Let me start over. We're going to be at PAX West again this year! And not only are we hosting our very own booth (#7301 on Floor 6) but we will be featuring a whole bunch of fun stuff. Read on to learn more...

Put a Bird on it for Charity

Some of you may remember that last year we did a charity fundraiser for Take This and AFK Rooms at PAX, raising over $11,500 in support of Mental Health Awareness!

This year we have partnered with the incredible Amy T. Falcone, aka Walnut Dankgrass on Acquisitions Incorporated: The "C" Team, to bring Walnut's Familiar, Vizier, the Steller's Jay, to Idle Champions.

Would you like to know more? We have a video for you!

Through August 27th, 2019, all net proceeds from the Vizier the Steller's Jay Familiar Pack will be donated to Take This in support of AFK Rooms at PAX events. It's a fantastic cause and one we really believe in, so we hope you'll help!

    Meet the Cool Kids

What fun is a PAX without your friends? This year we're hosting some amazingly-talented folks over at Booth 7301 for signings/meet & greets, and when we're not already introducing you to awesome people our artists will be drawing caricatures of PAX attendees as D&D classes. Ever wanted to have your likeness immortalized as a Warlock or Barbarian on a fragile sheet of paper? PAX West is your chance!

Yes, you read that right: it's all caricatures, all day long on Monday, September 2nd. Many PAX attendees wait until Monday to get their caricatures done, and that's awesome - but keep in mind that the queue for caricatures does tend to fill up quickly!

    Free PAX Stuffâ„¢

At past events we've always had a selection of Champions for players to pick up through Champion Postcards. This PAX we're going to put a little bit of a spin on it and make things far more simple. There will be one giveaway to rule them all: Rockstar Jim Darkmagic!

Anyone who drops by Booth 7301 can pick up a Champion Postcard that unlocks Rockstar Jim Darkmagic, a costume based on Mike Krahulik's cosplay at Acquisitions Incorporated Live - PAX West 2018. And, if you don't already have Jim Darkmagic unlocked, the Rockstar Jim Darkmagic Postcard will unlock him for you as well.

I can already hear the collective groan of players who will miss out on PAX West and their chance to get Rockstar Jim Darkmagic. Worry not, friends — we will be making Rockstar Jim Darkmagic available again in the future. So while PAX West 2019 will be your first chance to get this exclusive outfit, it will return, and in the meantime you'll be at least as cool as Jim!

    Is that it?

No, that's not all! But the other stuff isn't quite ready to be shared. We have a rather ambitious idea for our booth setup this year and we're still working on it, unsure about whether or not this crazy idea will work. We hope to share that info soon, but everyone may have to wait until the doors open to PAX West and then head on over to Booth 7301 on Floor 6 in order to find out...

In the meantime, we hope you'll consider contributing to Take This by grabbing your very own Vizier the Steller's Jay Familiar!

Idle Champions: Year One Champion Update, Part 1
    Posted in Idle Champions.

Today we're introducing the first half of our year one Champion balance update. The purpose of this update is to give fresh life to some underappreciated and/or underutilized Champions from the first year of events and adventures. This update includes everything from small tweaks to complete reworks for Binwin, Bruenor, Catti-brie, Diath, Drizzt, Evelyn, Nrakk, Regis, Stoki, Wulfgar, and Zorbu. Read on to learn more about the Champion changes in this update.

    Binwin

We wanted to give Binwin a major overhaul while retaining his ability to hit things a lot of times and smash through armor and hits-based health like butter. His new abilities give you many options for building a formation around Binwin, but shorter races will win out over taller ones for the biggest boosts. The new "Lingering Damage" ability also gives Binwin an interesting catch-up mechanic if he's playing the role of secondary DPS. Try him out!
    • Binwin's base attack cooldown is now 6 seconds, up from 4 seconds
    • Binwin's "Extra Attacks" ability now grants extra attacks based off of attacks by adjacent Champions, instead of doing so randomly. It still grants bonus damage for each successive hit, but is no longer buffed by any other upgrades or gear
    • Added a new ability "Extra Damage" at level 70 which grants additional bonus damage on Binwin's next attack(s) based on kills by adjacent Champions since his last attack, including kills via ultimate attacks
    • Added a new ability "Tallest in Faerun" at level 260 which buffs Binwin's damage based on the number of dwarves, gnomes, kobolds, and halflings in the formation
    • Added a new ability "Lingering Damage" at level 380 which causes "Extra Damage" to roll over a portion of its bonus damage to Binwin's next attack(s) if he doesn't kill anything with his current attacks
    • Removed Binwin's old specializations
    • Added a new specialization choice "More Minions" at level 200 which increases the range of "Extra Attacks" and "Extra Damage" so that all Champions within 2 slots of Binwin contribute hits and kills
    • Added a new specialization choice "Antisocial Dwarfing" at level 200 which changes "Extra Attacks" and "Extra Damage" to only trigger off of non-adjacent Champions, but which also boosts Binwin's base damage by a large amount
    • Binwins's upgrades and balance has been completely redone
    • Slot 3 gear now buffs Binwin's "Extra Damage" ability instead of global DPS
    • Slot 4 gear now buffs Binwin's "Tallest in Faerun" ability instead of increasing his "Extra Attacks" chance
    • Added the "barbarian" tag to Binwin, as we now have support for mutli-class Champions in the game that we didn't have when he was originally released

    Bruenor

Not a major change, but we added an ability to Bruenor for synergy with the Companions of the Hall (Bruenor, Drizzt, Catti-brie, Regis, and Wulfgar). It's a small bump for Rally even if you can only sneak one other Companion into your formation, but the payoff could be huge if you're going to try out a full Companions combo.
    • Added a new upgrade for "Long Lost Companions" at level 1000 which synergizes with the other Companions of the Hall Champions, increasing your gold find by 100% and buffing "Rally" based on the number of Companions in the formation

    Catti-brie

Catti-brie got some small buffs to increase both her buffing ability and her solo damage. Her design intent is to have her as a secondary DPS and support for Drizzt in a Companions of the Hall formation. She should now be able to support well in almost any formation, though, thanks to her "Death March" ability, which stacks multiplicatively (though buffs apply after the stacks, like normal).
    • Catti-brie's base attack cooldown decreased to 5.3 seconds from 5.4 seconds
    • Added a new ability "Death March" at level 135 which increases the damage of all Champions in front of Catti-brie based on the number of enemies affected by "Mark of Death"; the stacks apply multiplicatively, so the numbers get quite large when a lot of enemies are afflicted by "Mark of Death"
    • Added a new ability "Take Them Down" at level 375 which synergizes with the other Companions of the Hall Champions, increasing your gold find by 100% and increasing the damage enemies take in certain situations based on the number of Companions in the formation
    • Changed the specialization "In The Zone" to increase Catti-brie's attack speed after a critical hit
    • Catti-brie's upgrades and balance has been completely redone

    Diath/Xander

Diath has been replaced by Xander. Xander's stats, formation abilities, and attacks are functionally identical to Diath's (with the exception of one affiliation-specific formation ability), although their names and appearances are different.
    • Replaced Diath with Xander
    • Converted all Diath chests into Xander chests
    • Updated Xander's ultimate attack to summon a stone giant
    • Updated some achievements to require Xander; existing progress is not lost
    • Updated some adventures/variants to require Xander
    • "Childlike Wonder" now buffs "Streetwise" for each sorcerer, warlock, and wizard adjacent to Xander
    • Updated Xander's tags
    • Note: Paultin's "Stronger Together" ability has had its base value increased

    Drizzt

Drizzt has been completely refactored from his scimitars up. His panther summon has moved from his ultimate to an innate ability, and he is now built around bursts of damage and speed when Guenhwyvar is active. As with other Companions of the Hall, he also synergizes in a very powerful fashion when more of them are active in the formation.
    • Drizzt's attacks have been refactored; he now attacks in sequence, similar to Delina, striking first with his scimitar Icingdeath, then his other scimitar Twinkle, then both at once
    • Added a new ability "Guenhwyvar" at level 20 which causes Drizzt to randomly summon Guenhwyvar to aid him in combat for 30 seconds. Guenhwyvar attacks two enemies just before Drizzt and deals Drizzt's damage plus a 20 second bleed; Some of Drizzt's other abilities are triggered off of attacking enemies who have this bleed on them
    • Changed "Icingdeath" to cause Drizzt to deal more damage and reduce his cooldown when he attacks an enemy bled by Guenhwyvar with his scimitar Icingdeath
    • Changed "Twinkle" to cause Drizzt to deal AOE damage and increase the target's chance to miss when he attacks an enemy bled by Guenhwyvar with his scimitar Twinkle
    • Note the effects of both "Icingdeath" and "Twinkle" proc when Drizzt attacks Guenhwyvar-bled enemies with both scimitars at once
    • Changed "Companions of the Hall" to synergize with the other Companions of the Hall Champions, increasing your gold find by 100% and increasing the damage Drizzt does based on the number of Companions in the formation
    • Replaced the "Whirl of Steel" specialization with "Leader of the Companions" which boosts the gold find synergy of the "Companions of the Hall" ability
    • Changed the "Drow Stalker" specialization to increase Drizzt's base damage
    • Drizzt's upgrades and balance has been completely redone
    • Drizzt's ultimate attack has been replaced by "Whirl of Steel", which attacks enemies for massive damage one after another until a hit doesn't kill an enemy (similar to Jalaxle's base attack, but with ultimate level damage)
    • Slot 3 gear now buffs Drizzt's new "Icingdeath" ability instead of Global DPS
    • Added a Champion achievement for Drizzt

    Evelyn

Evelyn didn't need much work this round, since she was recently a part of the Shielding, Healing, and Tanking update. We did give her some health gear to give her a bit more scalability, but the price to pay was a small decrease in the power of her specializations.
    • Slot 4 gear now increases max health instead of specialization abilities
    • Evelyn's specialization have had their base values increased to compensate for the lost gear. They now increase Divine Prayer by 300% when active, up from 100%

    Nrakk

We've rebuilt Nrakk from the ground up to focus on a unique "Ki Points" mechanic. Nrakk generates Ki Points from his attacks and abilities and uses those Ki Points to increase his damage, decreasing his attack cooldown, and stun enemies. Each specialization choice results in a unique attack rotation with predictable stuns, cleaves, and big bursts of damage. Oh, and did we mention he can buff adjacent support Champions to be even more supportive, so even if you're not using him for DPS there may be some super unique and effective formations he can fit in. Super interesting!
    • Added a new ability "Ki Master" at level 20 which causes Nrakk's base attack to grant Ki Points whenever he attacks. Ki points increase Nrakk's damage and decrease his base attack cooldown for each one he has. He can have up to 8 Ki Points at once
    • Changed "Stunning Strike" to trigger when Nrakk has 4 or more Ki Points. Guaranteed stun instead of a change to stun, and consumed 4 Ki Points
    • Changed "Deft Strike" to grant an additional Ki Point (for a total of 2 per Deft Strike attack)
    • Added a new ability "Githzerai Focus" at level 185 which increases the effectiveness of adjacent Champions' formation abilities if their WIS score is 14 or higher
    • Changed Nrakk's "Kensei Advantage" specialization to grant 3 Ki Points (for a total of 4, or 5 with a Deft Strike) whenever "Kensei Cleave" hits more than one enemy
    • Renamed Nrakk's "Unerring Accuracy" specialization to "Unerring Precision" and changed it to make "Deft Strike" grant 2 extra Ki Points per hit instead of 1 (for a total of 3 Ki Points per Deft Strike), and also grant a moderate damage increase
    • Nrakk's upgrades and balance has been completely redone
    • Nrakk's base attack has been renamed Naginata, and the base cooldown has been increased to 5.5 seconds from 5 seconds
    • Slot 3 gear now buffs "Ki Master" instead of global DPS
    • Moved Nrakk's old achievement to the "Legacy" category; it is no longer attainable
    • Added a new achievement for Nrakk

    Regis

We wanted to bump up the power of Regis to give him a shot in some formations. His new ability increases the effectiveness of his buffing, potentially by a lot if you can structure your formation properly. We also gave him a Companions of the Hall synergy ability which grants a big one-time heal when your formation comes under attack. It has a pretty hefty cooldown, but if you're constantly coming under attack and then wiping out your attackers, it could be useful.
    • Added a new ability "Ruby Amplification" at level 320. This ability increases the effect of "Ruby Encouragement" for each Champion being affected by it
    • Added a new ability "Ruby Invigoration" at level 450 which synergizes with the other Companions of the Hall Champions, increasing your gold find by 100% and causing Regis to heal the formation when it comes under attack for an amount based on the number of Companions in the formation. The heal is large, but has a 15 second cooldown and only triggers when the formation becomes under attack, not while it is already under attack
    • Regis' ultimate attack now deals damage and slows all enemies. Enemies slowed by his ultimate take additional damage. His ultimate is now classified as a magical ranged attack, instead of melee
    • Slot 1 gear now buffs global DPS instead of self DPS
    • Added the "healing" tag to Regis since he now has an ability that can heal the formation

    Stoki

Stoki has been refactored in order to excel as a formation buffer and gold finder at your wall or during challenging encounters with lots of enemies. Her abilities now buff people directly instead of her Marks of Ki debuffing enemies, but she still marks enemies to power those buffs.
    • Stoki's base attack now hits random enemies instead of the front-most
    • Stoki's base attack cooldown is now 5.75 seconds instead of 3.75
    • Changed "Ki Strike" to be a base ability (no specialization required); instead of debuffing enemies to take more damage, Stoki now buffs Champions on the edge of the formation based on how many Marks of Ki are active on enemies
    • Changed "Golden Palm" to buff gold dropped when Champions adjacent to Stoki kill enemies. The amount of bonus gold is again based on the number of Marks of Ki active on enemies
    • Added a new ability "Ki Infusion" at level 190 which makes it so each enemy can have up to five Marks of Ki at once. Stoki adds one Mark of Ki each time she attacks an enemy, and can add multiple Marks of Ki per attack if she attacks the same enemy multiple times
    • Added a new specialization option "Ki Overflow" at level 275 which causes enemies with five Marks of Ki to have a chance of being stunned when struck by Stoki
    • Added a new specialization option "Ki Explosion" at level 275 which causes enemies with five Marks of Ki to have a chance to explode when struck by Stoki, doing damage and spreading additional Marks of Ki to other nearby enemies
    • Stoki's upgrades and balance has been completely redone
    • Slot 1 gear now buffs global DPS instead of self DPS
    • Removed the "dps" tag from Stoki - she is now intended to be a full support Champion
    • Moved Stoki's old achievement to the "Legacy" category; it is no longer attainable
    • Added a new achievement for Stoki

    Wulfgar

Wulfgar has been turned into the Companions of the Hall go-to tanking Champion, with multiple abilities that synergize powerfully with other Companion Champions. He's still a stunning machine, with bursts of power when he stuns multiple enemies multiple times in a row.
    • Removed Wulfgar's existing specializations, but the names are being used for the new formation abilities, just to be confusing
    • Added a new ability "Clangeddin's Will" at level 20 which provides powerful formation buffs when Wulfgar stuns 3 or more enemies at once (more likely when he's tanking a cluster of enemies)
    • Added a new ability "Dumathoin's Will" at level 70 which provides a powerful damage shield for Wulfgar when he stuns a boss creature. The size of the shield is relative to the remaining health of the boss monster he stunned
    • Added a new ability "King of the Elk Tribe" at level 110 which increases the health of all Champions by a percentage of Wulfgar's max health
    • Added a new ability "Moradin's Will" at level 130 which increases the damage of Companions of the Hall Champions based on the number of enemies Wulfgar is tanking
    • Added a new ability "Empowered Warhammer" at level 180 which synergizes with the other Companions of the Hall Champions, increasing your gold find by 100% and increasing the chance of Wulgar's base attack stun based on the number of Companions in the formation
    • Updated the "Smash 'n Grab" ability to temporarily buff the damage of the whole party when Wulfgar attacks an armored enemy but doesn't break a piece of armor
    • Added a new specialization choice "Heavy Blows" at level 265 that increases Wulfgar's base attack stun chance
    • Added a new specialization choice "Flag Bearer" at level 265 that gives Wulfgar an additional chance to stun boss enemies, and causes stuns against bosses to trigger Clangeddin's Will with a higher damage buff than normal enemies
    • Added a number of upgrades that increase Wulfgar's max health
    • Wulfgar's upgrades and balance has been completely redone
    • Removed the "dps" tag and added the "tanking" tag, since Wulfgar has been rebalanced as a tank intended for Companions of the Hall formations
    • Slot 1 gear now buffs global DPS instead of self DPS
    • Slot 2 gear now buffs max health instead of self DPS

    Zorbu

We removed Zorbu's Favored Enemies idea and replaced it with Lifelong Enemies, our second ability whose stacks persist through resets. Zorbu gains damage buffs against certain enemies for each enemy of that type that he kills, and the rest of his abilities receive buffs based on those totals, meaning if you focus on Zorbu as your DPS, the scaling potential is massive. We haven't forgotten that Zorbu can also play a big support role, so we've bumped up his global DPS buffs by quite a bit (more than making up for a small gear swap)
    • Removed the "Favored Enemy" specialization choices
    • Removed the "Colossus Slayer/Horde Breaker" specialization choices
    • Added a new ability "Lifelong Enemies" at level 30 that increases Zorbu's damage against humanoid, beast, undead, drow enemies based on the total number of those enemies he has killed. Persists through resets
    • Added a new ability "Seething Hatred" at level 50 which increases Zorbu's damage by a portion of the aggregate "Lifelong Enemies" buff
    • Added a new specialization choice "Lead The Pack" at level 90 which increases Hunter's Pack by the same amount as Seething Hatred increases Zorbu's damage
    • Added a new specialization choice "Favored Enemies" at level 90 which increases Zorbu's "Lifelong Enemies" damage bonus
    • Added a new specialization choice "Focused Anger" at level 90 which increases the rate at which stacks are earned with "Lifelong Enemies"
    • Zorbu's upgrades and balance has been completely redone
    • Slot 2 gear now buffs self DPS instead of global DPS
    • Slot 3 gear now buffs his new "Seething Hatred" ability instead of "Favored Enemy"
