Idle Champion Spotlight: Gale
Posted in Idle Champions.

"Sounds like a recipe for disaster. But you know what? I'm learning to enjoy the taste of chaos. Count me in."

With a kind heart and a keen mind, Gale of Waterdeep is ready to support his friends with words that are both poetic and a bit pompous. This wizard has a great deal of talent, and even greater ambitions. However those brilliant aspirations once lead him to becoming lost to Mystra's graces and cursed with a time bomb in his chest. He hopes his new found friends can help him earn back his place, as well as prevent a magical cataclysm.

I. Gale

Gale of Waterdeep was a prodigious archmage, his talents earning him the attention of Mystra, the goddess of magic. At her side, he learned all that mortals might accomplish with the Weave, in time earning his place as her lover, and her Chosen. And yet, he was not satisfied. In an attempt to prove he was ready for even greater power, he accidentally unleashed 'the orb' - a highly volatile fragment of pure Weave, corrupted by Netherese magic, which buried itself in his chest. Cast out by Mystra, humbled by his downfall, he does all he can to prevent the orb's cataclysmic detonation, watching for his chance to get back everything he lost, and more.

Gale is a support champion that buffs Champions in the two columns ahead of him and debuffs monsters the first time he attacks them. Gale's release is also when we will be releasing our latest Patron: Elminster! All of the details about Elminster as a Patron will be available in the Greengrass blog coming on April 3rd. Gale will have access to all of Elminster's Patron adventures and variants, and is ready to be unlocked in the first seat opposite Bruenor.

Check out our Champion Spotlight embedded below for a quick overview of Gale's abilities, and read on to get all of the details!

II. Gale

Race: Human Alignment: Neutral

III. Gale's Abilities

Basic Attack

  • Fire Bolt - Gale deals 1 hit to a random enemy, prioritizing enemies that haven't been affected by Netherese Orb's debuff.

The second specialization determines how Gale's Netherese Orb will get more powerful.
  • Ceremorphosis - Your formation gains one Ceremorphosis stack due to the mind flayer tadpole in Gale's brain. Gale increases the damage of Netherese Orb by 100% for each Ceremorphosis stack, stacking multiplicatively.

Idle Champion Reintroduction Spotlight: Penelope
Posted in Idle Champions.

"Won't you be my friend?"

The entire Heroes of the Planes affiliation have been a part of Idle Champions for quite a while now, including everyone's favorite friend in shrub form: Penelope! With the benefit of time, and now surrounded by all her Heroes companions, Penelope deserved a rework of her kit. Because while she might be everyone's friend, she's also ready to pack an earth filled punch to protect them! So let us introduce you to the new and improved Penelope Half-Pint!

I. Penelope

Penelope "Half-Pint" is a halfling who just wants to be everyone's best friend, even if they are evil, or a plant, or a rock. With friends that already include a treant named Neverember and a clan of chwinga that have adopted her, Penelope is ready for anything! She has the heart of a true hero and will always stand by her friends...until she goes into shrub mode of course.

Penelope is a Support, Gold Find, and Healing Champion who focuses on crowd control by slowing and debuffing enemies. She'll have her insect friends ready for when you swap her with Arkhan in seat 12.

Check out our Champion Spotlight Video embedded below for a quick overview of Penelope's abilities, and read on to get all of the details!

II. Penelope's Stats

Race: Halfling Alignment: Chaotic Good
Gender: Female Pronouns: She/Her
Age: 33 Affiliation: Heroes of the Planes Class: Druid (Circle of the Moon) / Warlock

STR: 10 DEX: 16 CON: 14
INT: 8 WIS: 17 CHA: 14

Role: Support, Gold Find, Healing

Eligible for Patrons: Mirt, Vajra, Zariel, Elminster (available from April 3rd, 2024 until April 3rd, 2027)

Seat: 12 (Arkhan)

III. Penelope's Abilities

Basic Attack

  • Go Away - Penelope jumps out and hits the closest enemy with her quarterstaff, dealing damage and knocking it back slightly.

Formation Abilities

  • Have You Met My Friends - Whenever Penelope attacks an enemy and doesn't kill it, for the next 30 seconds, all Champions deal 500% additional damage against them.
  • Insect Plague - Upon entering an area, Penelope summons 4 medium-sized, randomly positioned Insect Swarms on the near 2/3rds of the battlefield. Enemies who are in a Swarm are slowed by 100% and are afflicted by the Have You Met My Friends debuff. The slow effect can stack multiplicatively if an enemy is inside multiple Swarms. Every second that one or more enemies are inside the swarm, the slow effect is additively reduced by 1%. When the slow effect reaches 40%, the swarm is dispersed and disappears.
  • Chwinga Mask - When any enemy enters one of Penelope's Insect Swarms, Penelope dons her chwinga mask, calling an elemental friend to her aid. It sits on her shoulder while her mask is on. All Champions adjacent to Penelope gain the following charm(s) based on their tags. Charms last until the party changes areas.
    • Healing Charm (Tank Champions) - Penelope heals affected Champions for 100 HP every second.
    • Tools for the Job Charm (Healing, Support, or Gold Find) - Penelope increases the damage of all Champions by 400% for each Champion affected by this charm. This effect stacks multiplicatively.

Story Time stacks are capped at 1,000,000,000. Whenever a boss enemy enters an Insect Swarm, the number of Story Time stacks are increased by 2.5%.

First Specializations

  • Keep Your Friends Close - Increases the effect of Have You Met My Friends by 150% for each Good Champion in the formation, stacking multiplicatively.
  • Keep Your Future Friends Closer - Increases the effect of Have You Met My Friends by 125% for each Evil Champion in the formation, stacking multiplicatively.
  • Everybody Gets To Be Friends - Increases the effect of Have You Met My Friends by 70% for each Champion in the formation, stacking multiplicatively.

Second Specializations

  • Fury of the Fireflies - Each time one of Penelope's Insect Swarms is dispersed, the effect of Chwinga Mask (both charms) is increased by 200%, stacking multiplicatively and resetting when you change areas.
  • Splitting The Hive - Each time one of Penelope's Insect Swarms is dispersed, another smaller swarm appears randomly (preferring to appear on an enemy if possible), damaging monsters in it for 15 seconds of BUD damage and slowing them using the same rules as the original Insect Plague. These smaller swarms do not spawn additional ones when they disperse.
  • Dance of the Ladybugs - Each time one of Penelope's Insect Swarms is dispersed, Penelope reduces the cooldown of all adjacent Champions ultimate abilities by 20% of its remaining cooldown.

Ultimate Ability

  • Erupting Earth - A fountain of churned earth and stone erupt in the enemies' path (centered on the nearest enemy), dealing area damage in a large radius and creating difficult terrain that lasts for 30 seconds. Enemies that encounter the difficult terrain have their movement slowed by 50% while they travel through it.

  • Area Goals:
    • Tier 1: Complete Area 75.
    • Tier 2: Complete Area 250.
    • Tier 3: Complete Area 600.
    • Tier 4: Complete Area 1200.

Half-Full Outlook If we're going to make such a mess, let's clean up as we go!

Idle Champions: Greengrass 6
Posted in Idle Champions.

A great cosmic conflict has spilled out upon the prime material plane.

It's up to the Champions to defend the innocent and figure out what has drawn the attention of the Gith and their Endless War. It's time for Greengrass 6!

New Champion: Antrius

Antrius is your classic fantasy Bard - he’s a lover, not a fighter. His supportive parents paid his way through Bard College, and now Antrius is out on the road trying to make a name for himself with bravado, showmanship, and a seductive smolder.

Antrius is a Support and Healing Champion who empowers his companions with an Inspiring Song. With this song, he increases the damage of nearby companions and gives them temporary health to push through tough enemies. His tales depend on the stories of your Champions, so he buffs his companions based on the number of feats you have unlocked. Once unlocked, you can find this human bard in Slot 4 with Jarlaxle.

For more information on Antrius and his abilities, check out his Champion Spotlight!

It's up to the Champions to defend the innocent and figure out what has drawn the attention of the Gith and their Endless War. It's time for Greengrass 5!

Greengrass 5 introduces Gazrick Nomrad, the Gnome Druid from Rivals of Waterdeep, and brings back Orkira Illdrex, the Dragonborn Cleric, and Melf, the legendary Elf Fighter and Wizard. Players have until Monday, April 18th at 12PM Pacific to complete their Greengrass 5 unlocks and objectives.

    New Champion: Gazrick Nomrad

Hailing from the bitter cold of Icewind Dale, Gazrick is at home in the snow. But he was happy to be done with the cold as a traveling merchant, and he headed for the warmer climates of Waterdeep. There he fell into the company of the Rivals, joining them on adventures despite his insistence that he is just a simple entrepreneur. He may not think of himself as a hero, but he's done plenty of heroic deeds!

Gazrick is a member of the Rivals of Waterdeep, and is a Support and Gold Find Champion. He thrives in snowy environments and uses his cold-based attacks to slow and stun enemies. His attacks also reduce how much damage you need to deal to damage armor-based enemies! When you want to add him to your formation you can swap him with Minsc (Slot 7)

For more information on Gazrick and his abilities, check out his Champion Spotlight!

    Idle Champion Spotlight: Gazrick
    Posted in Idle Champions.

When you're a businessman, you sometimes have to get out of your comfort zone in order to find the best opportunities. If that means also becoming a detective, chef, and occasional hero, then this Champion is ready to haggle!

Gazrick Nomrad is an ice druid by birth, businessman by choice, and now a member of the Rivals of Waterdeep. While he's more comfortable talking trade than fighting monsters, he'll use his considerable cold powers to put the chill on anyone threatening his friends! He joins his fellow Rivals Shaka, Selise, and D'hani in the Champion roster during Greengrass!

    I. Gazrick

    Dungeons & Dragons Gazrick

Hailing from the bitter cold of Icewind Dale, Gazrick is at home in the snow. But he was happy to be done with the cold as a traveling merchant, and he headed for the warmer climates of Waterdeep. He may not think of himself as a hero, but he's done plenty of heroic deeds!

    Dungeons & Dragons Gazrick

    III. Gazrick's Design

Comedian, actor, voice over artist, writer, and graduate of Second City's Advanced Directing Program, Masood Haque has extensive performance experience. He appeared as a special guest on two special Rivals one shots before joining the cast as a full time member in Season 7. And now we are excited to have him join the Rivals as our latest Champion!

Harnessing the magic of all things cold, Gazrick Nomrad brings a wealth of frost-based spells to the formation. He'll defend himself by attacking enemies with Frostbite, while forming a Frosty Friendship with all Champions in a snowflake shape around his position to increase their damage. His chilly attacks cause Armor Ablation, helping reduce how much damage is needed to harm armor-based enemies. And he'll use his druidic powers to Control Weather causing enemies to take additional damage when it's snowing. But Gazrick is more comfortable as a Travelling Merchant, using his business skills to help his friends find more gold as they are out on an adventure! It may seem strange for a Champion to travel with a portable merchandise stall, but Gazrick insists that it's not weird.

Gazrick's three specializations allow him to boost either his gold find, armor ablation stack duration, or the damage caused by snow. If there isn't enough cold, his Ultimate will summon a Sleet Storm that changes the weather in that area to snow, causing enemies to take massive damage and making the terrain difficult with a coating of slick ice!

    IV. Gazrick's Abilities

    Basic Attack

    • Frostbite — Gazrick attacks the closest enemy with a magic attack that causes one hit, and a 50% chance that the enemy is stunned for 2 seconds.

    Formation Abilities

    • Frosty Friendship — Gazrick increases the damage of all Champions in a snowflake shape. (His column and in the 2 diagonal lines intersecting his formation slot.) The damage bonus depends on how far away they are from Gazrick, with the effect increasing for each slot.
    • Travelling Merchant — Gazrick now travels with a portable stall to sell his merch. Increase the gold find bonus by 100% for each Rivals of Waterdeep member in the formation, including himself
    • Armor Ablation — Gazrick's cold attacks lowers an enemy's armor threshold by 15% for 30 seconds. This only applies to armored enemies. Multiple hits stack (up to 60 times), but each stack tracks its own duration.
    • Control Weather — Gazrick causes enemies to take an additional +200% damage in areas where it is snowing.

    Specializations

    • Genius with Gold — Gazrick increases the effect of Travelling Merchant by +200%.
    • Aim Around Armor — Gazrick increases the duration of Armor Ablation by +100%.
    • Finesse with Frost — Gazrick increases the effect of Control Weather by +200%.

    Ultimate Ability

    • Sleet Storm — Gazrick attacks with sleet falling from the sky. The attack is centered on the closest enemy, dealing ultimate AOE damage in a large radius and creating an area of slick ice that lasts for 30 seconds. Enemies that encounter the difficult terrain have their movement slowed by 50% while they travel through it. A second after the attack the area's weather changes to snow until the area changes.

    V. Gazrick’s Equipment

    Slot 1: Global DPS
    Slot 2: Global DPS
    Slot 3: Frosty Friendship
    Slot 4: Travelling Merchant
    Slot 5: Control Weather
    Slot 6: Ultimate Cooldown

    Idle Champion Spotlight: Orkira Illdrex
    Posted in Idle Champions.

Orkira Illdrex joins her friends Avren, Penelope, Freely, and Briv Steelmarrow, and Alyndra Sarrbarand.

You may recognize Orkira from Heroes of the Planes and D4. Previously, she starred on D&D Beyond's Silver & Steel, Heroes of the Vale.

We are delighted to welcome her Idle Champions roster with your Year 4 Greengrass event. It's time for the latest Idle Champion Spotlight!

    I. Orkira Illdrex

Orkira Illdrex is a gold dragonborn from the Nentir Vale, where she grew up nurturing a love of healing and fire. Between a strange life filled with monsters, Gods, time and multiplanar travel, death, the destruction of worlds and the saving of others, Orkira has survived and adapted to deal with any situation with a motto of 'One problem at a time.'

Orkira is a Healing and Support Champion who continuously heals non-adjacent damaged Champions with Lesser Restoration, and will Self-Sacrifice if she can prevent the death of one of her companions. She also boosts DPS with Elemental Fire. When you want to add Orkira to your formation, you can swap her with Bruenor (Slot 1).

    II. Orkira's Stats

Race: Dragonborn (Gold) Alignment: Chaotic Good
Class: Cleric (Phoenix Domain) Gender: Female
Age: 34 Affiliation: Heroes of the Planes

    STR: 13 DEX: 14 CON: 16
    INT: 8 WIS: 20 CHA: 18

    Role: Healing, Support

Eligible for Patrons: Mirt the Moneylender, Vajra Safahr, Zariel

    Slot: 1, (Bruenor)

    III. Orkira's Design

We were always excited about the possibility of working with Lauren Urban about bringing her beloved Orkira to Idle Champions, and little did we think many moons ago during our initial planning meetings that we would be welcoming not only Orkira to Idle Champions but also Lauren herself as our Community Manager!

When Lauren isn't working with us at Codename, she's a prolific DM and player on a variety of livestreams and podcasts (Heroes of the Planes, D4, Dungeon Drunks), as well as a professional classical oboist.

Orkira is sweet and straightforward, much like she is on livestream, healing and buffing the party. Orkira continuously heals nonadjacent Champions with Lesser Restoration, like most healing, it's most effective when her allies are damaged. Noble and kind of heart, she will Self-Sacrifice to swap places with a non-adjacent ally when they are about to receive a killing blow. Orkira also aids the party by damaging enemies with Elemental Fire. This is boosted by her Healing Flame.

The Phoenix has played a large role in Orkira's life, and her bond with the Phoenix is explored with her Specializations Breath of the Phoenix to increase damage and Tailfeather of the Phoenix to increase healing.

    IV. Orkira's Abilities

    Basic Attack

    • Burning Hands — Orkira leaps to a random enemy and raises her hands, causing fire to erupt from the tips of her claws in a small area of effect cone.

    Formation Abilities

    • Lesser Restoration — Orkira heals all non-adjacent damaged Champions. Buffed by equipment, feats, and upgrades.
    • Elemental Fire — Whenever Orkira damages an enemy, they receive one stack of Elemental Fire, taking 10% of Orkira's damage per second for 15 seconds and receiving 100% additional damage from all attacks. This ability stacks up to 10 times (additively) and attempting to add another stack will reset the cooldown of all stacks. Buffs to this ability increase only the damage debuff bonus (not the damage over time). Buffed by equipment, feats, and upgrades.
    • Healing Flame — Increase the effect of Elemental Fire by 100% for each order of magnitude worth of effective healing done with Lesser Restoration on the current run. Buffed by equipment, feats, and upgrades. Buffs apply to the post-stack value.
    • Self Sacrifice — If a Champion Orkira is able to heal (ie. non-adjacent) is about to take a killing blow, Orkira instantly swaps formation slots with that Champion for 10 seconds and takes the hit for them. During this time Orkira's overwhelm point is set to twice the other Champion's and neither Orkira nor the other Champion can be moved, removed, or swapped out; after the time expires they swap back regardless of whether Orkira and/or the other Champion died during the time. This effect can only occur once every 60 seconds. This ability is not buffed.

    Specializations

    • Breath of the Phoenix — Increase the size of Orkira's Burning Hands area of effect cone and have Elemental Fire apply two stacks instead of one.
    • Tailfeather of the Phoenix — Increase the effect of Lesser Restoration by 100%. Lesser Restoration will now "heal" undamaged Champions and Healing Flame will count 1% of this non-effective healing as well.

    Ultimate Ability

    • Radiance of the Phoenix — Orkira flies up over the enemies, grasping The Domain of the Phoenix and uttering a prayer, summoning The Phoenix to rain Elemental Fire down upon the battlefield. This deals damage over time and increases the Elemental Fire stacks of affected enemies by 1 every 2 seconds for 10 seconds.

    V. Orkira's Epic Equipment

    Slot 1: Global DPS
    Slot 2: Global DPS
    Slot 3:
    Lesser Restoration
    Slot 4:
    Elemental Fire
    Slot 5:
    Healing Flame
    Slot 6: Ultimate Cooldown

    VI. Conclusion

We are thrilled Orkira is keeping her friends on the Idle Champions roster alive and we are excited to see how well she fits into the meta. If you have feedback, let us know in a Community Q&A or Champion feedback post on the Idle Champions Subreddit, on the Steam forums, or on the Official Idle Champions Discord!

    Idle Champions: Greengrass 3
    Posted in Idle Champions.

A great cosmic conflict has spilled out upon the prime material plane.

While celebrations to mark the start of spring begin in the quaint Sword Coast town of Triboar, a Githyanki raiding party descents from above, raining destruction.

It's up to the Champions to defend the innocent and figure out what has drawn the attention of the Gith and their Endless War. It's time for Greengrass 3!

Greengrass 3 introduces Melf, the legendary Elf Fighter and Wizard, and brings back Aila and Nrakk. Players have until Monday, April 13 at 12PM Pacific to complete their Greengrass 3 unlocks and objectives.

Dungeons & Dragons Melf Luke Gygax

    Year 3 Champion: Melf

Born into the royal family of Celene, he assumed the simple name of Melf eschewing a life of comfort as a noble to study the arcane arts and train as a swordsman. He delved in the dungeons of Castle Greyhawk, the Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth and many other harrowing places honing his skills, knowledge and amassing powerful magic items. Melf sees himself as a weapon of weal hurtling toward the heart of the darkest evils in the realm. He is opinionated and has a touch of conceit that he is blissfully ignorant of possessing.

Melf is a Fighter and Wizard Support Champion. His legendary spellbook is filled with versatile Support Spells, offering a variety of potential damage buffs and speed boosts. When you want to add Melf to your formation, you can swap him with Arkhan (Slot 12).

For more information about Melf, check out the Idle Champion Spotlight: Melf dev blog!

Dungeons & Dragons Aila High Rollers

    Year 2 Champion: Aila

Aila was found and raised by a clan of wild elves, but never truly felt like she belonged. The tartan that was found with her is the only clue she has to her lost elven roots. Aila is stubborn and proud. Whenever anyone questions her past, she simply states 'I'm a delight!'. However, her smirk holds a lifetime of anger & questions that she's held close to her heart.
Aila is a path of the Storm Herald Barbarian, able to Tank and Support in formations. She wields the primal power of storms to damage, stun, and weaken enemies. When you want to add Aila to your formation, you can swap her with Makos (Slot 9).

For more information about Aila, check out the Idle Champion Spotlight: Aila dev blog!

    Dungeons & Dragons Nrakk

    Year 1 Champion: Nrakk

Having watched your party's progress for many years from Limbo, the Great Githzerai, Zaerith Menyar-Ag-Gith, has dispatched Nrakk to join your party on the Material Plane. Though his true motivations are unknown, Nrakk is a Way of the Kensei monk whose weapon of choice is a Naginata, making him a true force to be reckoned with on the battlefield. Reserved and aloof, Nrakk sometimes has a hard time interacting with those he sees as his lessers, but he nevertheless seems committed to the party's cause.
Nrakk is a methodical Githzerai Monk, able to DPS and Support formations. His meticulous approach to DPS has him able to deal AoE damage, stun, and bonus damage to single targets. When you want to add Nrakk to your party, you can swap him with Delina or Hitch (Slot 8).

For more information about Nrakk, check out the Year One Champion Balance Update, Part 1 dev blog!

    Year Three Variants

    • Honorable Discharge — Each Champion can only be used to complete 50 areas.
      Reach Area 75.

    • The Problem Solvers — Only Champions with an INT score of 13 or higher can be used.
      Reach Area 125.

    • Wheat From the Chaff — Melf starts out in the formation with Melf's Righteous Determination unlocked. Only enemies that Melf deems evil can be damaged. Blockers, bosses, and boss trash mobs are always deemed evil. All non-evil enemies are invulnerable and can not even be attacked.
      Reach Area 175.

    Year Two Variants

    • Pixie Machinations — A pixie riding an intellect devourer (like you do) arrives in every area. When it appears, a random Champion is stunned until the pixie is destroyed.
      Reach Area 75.

    • Starve Them Out — Only champions with INT 12 or less can be used. A giant intellect devourer with 200 armor-based HP arrives in each area. While it is alive, all other monsters are immune to damage. For each collective point of intellect BELOW 12 in your formation, the giant intellect devourer's armor is reduced by 10, to a minimum of 10 armor-based hits. For example. If you have Bruenor in your formation, his 8 INT (4 less than 12) will reduce the giant intellect devourer's health by 40 (4x10).
      Reach Area 125.

    • Ride the Storm — Aila starts in your formation. Aila's Storm Aura hits two enemies with each strike. Only enemies who are either Primed or Electrified by Aila can be damaged.
      Reach Area 175.

    Year One Variants

    • Flower Power — Sentient flower enemies spawn at random in non-boss areas. When killed, they imbue the champion who killed them with a random power, which can be good or bad.
      Reach Area 125.

    • Unlikely Allies — Two Githzerai monks take up slots in the formation. Each increases the DPS of Nrakk by 400% as long as he is adjacent to them, stacking multiplicatively.
      Reach Area 175.
