Flap...flap...flap.

Flap...flap...flap.

The hairs on the back of your neck rise as you enter the tent, a pungent smell filling your nostrils, something that smells like dust and dry earth. You look around for the source, hoping your eyes adjust to the dim lighting soon. You try to think back on what the sign outside the tent said, but you were running too fast to have read it properly.

Flap...flap...flap.

That odd sound happens again, closer this time. You turn around, trying to find the entrance to the tent again, thinking it might be worth facing the creatures outside rather than whatever is in here. And then you feel the hand on your back.

A small squeak slips out of your mouth, adventurer or no, and you turn back to whatever touched you. All you can see is wings.

Nate was wandering through the forest one day, exploring away from the main campsite. Coming upon a crossroads of trails, he's startled by the appearance of a figure in a fox mask, huddled on a boulder, looking like they're crying.

"Can I help you?" he asks.

"Do you have some snacks, brave and noble sir?" the figure responds. Nate clutches at some compartments on his bandolier and looks reluctant, but the figure starts crying again. "Sure, why not?" He reaches in and pulls out the sandwich he planned to eat later and gives it to the figure.

They eat it right away, and then scramble off the boulder and disappear into the forest, leaving Nate perplexed. He shrugs and keeps on walking, though sometimes he swears he catches a glint of a fox following him in the trees. Coming across a meadow, he decides to nap before returning to the group. He takes off his bandoliers and lays them on the ground beside him and dozes off.

A rustling wakes him up and turns to see a fox sneaking off with his bandoliers. He stumbles to his feet and gives chase, though he loses sight of the animal quickly. Cursing, he blunders a few more feet in and finds his bandoliers on the ground. He opens them to find them full of leaves. He's lost all the treasures he had on him. Sighing, he heads back to camp, hoping to ask for help from his fellow Crusaders.

Stepping into the main camp, he's surprised to find the other Crusaders surrounding a figure in a fox mask.

"What are you doing here?" he asks.

"That was fun earlier in the forest," they respond. " I'd like to come along and have more adventures. My name is Mitsuko."

Nate scuffs the ground, but the other Crusaders are excited for a new friend. Mitsuko has joined the party.

Rolling Mirrors spawn randomly and live at least 5 seconds. While a mirror is alive, the whole formation takes damage. When a mirror is killed, a random Crusader gets bad luck and is disabled for 20 seconds. Areas become difficult much quicker. Beat area 1800.

Rewards: Awards an e200 maximum number cap increase.

  • Evil Scheme - On the Mme. Finklebottom's Revenge campaign.

Arenvarr takes up a spot in the formation and can't be moved. Other than Arenvarr, only Evil or Demon Crusaders can be used. An Evil Clown escort takes up a spot in the formation. If the clown dies, the objective fails instantly. The Thing monster spawns randomly and can only be hurt by click damage. When the thing is killed, the clown grants a buff to Crusaders, stacking additively for each monster killed. Areas become difficult much quicker. Beat area 2000.

Rewards: Unlocks the Tier 8 Talent Arithmagician Newts.

New Tier 8 Utility Tree Talents

These two new talents will be available after completing the objectives Moon and Evil Scheme respectively.
  • Olympian Training - Increases the maximum Crusader level by 25 for each level of the talent. Max level 200.

  • Arithmagician Newts - Increases the maximum number cap by e10 for each level of the talent. Max level 100.

Note: Since this update includes an increase to the maximum number cap, we've changed the drop rates for bonus boss Idols starting at area 5900.

You can check out the change log in the game for additional information about this update.

COTLI: Introducing The Dungeons & The Crypt

Hail Crusaders!

You may have heard whispers about "uncapped objectives" swirling around this year and wondered what they were. Well, wonder no more! It's time to descend into The Dungeons!

Welcome to The Dungeons

What are the Dungeons you might ask? Well, it's a set of 10 new objectives for you to enjoy, with a major bonus: no maximum DPS cap! That's right, you can now see how far your formation building will take you without running into an invisible wall! The Dungeons are available to try once you've completed the From the Ashes Tier 3 Objective in the Mischief at Mugwarts campaign.

These objectives come with all-new formations that range from 12 to 15(!) spots to place your Crusaders, challenging you ascend to new heights while expanding your creativity. And getting deeper into these objectives is good, as it will net you more rewards in the form of Dungeon Coins, an all-new currency arriving with this update. Dungeon Coins can be spent on various items in the new Dungeon Coin shop, The Dungeon Depot, helping you gain even more additional power to push your formations even further.

10 New Formations

We wanted to give you a brief introduction to the 10 new formations, so without further ado, here they are!

Playing it Old School

This formation will look familiar to most players, as it's a take on Ready Player Two with the bottom spot of the middle column removed, leaving it with 13 spots for you to build your formation with. But we have faith you can make it work!

Free for All

This formation features two columns of 4 Crusaders each for you to experiment with, as you build a formation that works with the 12 spots you have available.

Fun and Games

Two columns of 4 again, but with different adjacent spots for the center two spots and the extra front spot gives you some more variety in this formation of 13 Crusaders.

Under Fire

Another riff on the Ready Player Two formation, but this time with the center 2 spots having more adjacent spots than in the original.

Sunday Stroll

Another 13 spot formation for you to try out, starting big on the outside and going in to the lone center spot. How far can this formation take you?

Dark Dwellers

14 spots for you to play with in this N-shaped formation, featuring 3 columns of 4 Crusaders each and a couple Mindy friendly spots, but those two solo spot columns might prove tricky to craft around.

Making Waves

The first 15 spot formation of the new formations. Ride the wave as you make this formation work.

Jungle Journey

Another 15 spot formation, with columns of 4 and more of your Crusaders clustered together. We're excited to see how you can take advantage of this shape to push as far as you can.

Achieve Flight

With 14 spots and a column of 4, this evil eye formation might not be so evil after all, especially with its Mindy friendly spots.

Dungeon Crawl

The final new formation is also 14 spots for you to fill, with yet another column of 4, flanked by columns of two and bounded by columns of 3 Crusaders.

We hope you enjoy busting out your formation crafting with these new formations!

New Rotating Buff System

But we can hear you ask, why would I do any objective other than the ones with the excellent 15 spot formations?

Good question player! Well, the Dungeons also feature a rotating buff system. So of the 10 objectives, 3 will be assigned a buff to give you a bonus for doing that objective. The buffs will rotate to 3 different objectives every time you reset the world off of an objective in The Dungeons. So you can benefit from doing an objective with a smaller formation if you do it while it has the buff that you currently want.

The three buffs that will rotate are:
  • Bonus Idols - Gain anywhere from 0.01% of your current total Idols at the time you reset the world, up to 3% depending on how deep you get before resetting the world on an objective when it has this buff. Ka-ching!

  • Bonus Dungeon Coins - Gain 10% more Dungeon Coins from this reset when you choose an objective that has this buff. Dungeonlicious!

  • Bonus Dungeon Points! - Gain 10% more Dungeon points from this reset when you choose an objective that has this buff. Cryptastic!
Dungeon points, you ask? Let's continue on to the next section.

New Season: The Crypt

The Dungeons update will also introduce our new 'Seasons' mechanic to the game and our first season: The Crypt! Complete the whole season and in addition to the in-game achievement for beating it, you'll unlock our adorable new Crypt-themed taskmaster, Li'l Reaper.

So what's the short and long of it?

  • If you have access to the Dungeons objectives, you can participate in the season.

  • You have 12 weeks to earn enough Dungeon Points to clear all 25 levels and earn all the prizes, including Li'l Reaper.

  • For our first season, The Crypt, Dungeon points are only earned from completing objectives in the Dungeons.

  • The deeper you go on an objective, the more points you get.

  • You can do 15 objectives for Dungeon points a week for free, letting you choose when you can invest your time in earning those points.

  • If you need additional runs to earn your Dungeon points, you can spend Dungeon Coins in the Dungeon Depot to access additional runs for the week.

Want even more goodies than you can earn for free? You can support Crusaders by purchasing the Mysterious Benefactor's pass at any time. You'll immediately be able to claim any premium rewards you've already unlocked and you'll be able to claim the others as you meet the season goals.

We're looking forward to your feedback on this new addition to Crusaders! Get your delving on!

F.A.Q. for Dungeons and The Crypt Season

  • Q: What are the Dungeon objectives?

A: They are a series of new objectives for you to test your mettle against. The maximum number cap has been removed, so you can go as far as your heart desires and see what your true DPS is in these all-new formations.

  • Q: How do I access the Dungeons objectives?

A: Once you've completed the Tier 3 Objective From the Ashes in the Mischief at Mugwarts campaign, objectives for The Dungeons will become available from the campaign selection screen.

  • Q: Why no bonus boss Idol drops?

A: Because the bonus boss Idols drops are based on the areas reached and the maximum number cap has been removed for these objectives.

  • Q: Will I get progress towards my Free Play Bonus by doing these objectives?

A: No, these objectives do not count towards that bonus, as these are special types of objectives and that bonus is for rotating through the free plays on the permanent themed campaigns.

  • Q: What do I get from doing the Dungeons objectives?

A: You get the all-new Dungeon Coins to purchase items from the new Dungeon shop; and Dungeon points for the current season. The debut season is The Crypt.

  • Q: Can I only do these objectives once?

A: No, you can do each objective multiple times. The only limit is your weekly allowance of runs.

  • Q: How do I see my season progress?

A: You can click on the all-new Dungeons button on the Rosette tab at the bottom of the screen, the one with your Achievements, Stats and Challenges information.

  • Q: Why is the season geared towards veterans? How can I make progress?

A: The season is meant to be additional end game content, but we still want mid level players to have access to the dungeon objectives. You can still earn points, especially if you take advantage of the buff that gives more Dungeon Points from a reset. You do also have the twelve weeks to try and get up into the higher echelon of power, and you can purchase extra runs for Dungeon Coins in the later weeks if you've managed to raise your power levels by then.

  • Q: What happens if I can't complete the first season?

A: The top prize for the season will become available for Dungeon Coins in the Dungeon Coin store a few weeks after the season completes.

  • Q: Do I have to claim the rewards right when I unlock them?

A: No, you can wait to claim them until you're ready to use them. However, if the season has ended, any unclaimed rewards will automatically be claimed at the end. Rewards will be awarded if you are in the game when the season ends, or the next time you log in if your game is closed when the season ends.

  • Q: If I purchased the Mysterious Benefactor's pass during the previous season, do I get the rewards in the current season?

A: No, but you keep all of the permanent rewards you've earned from the old season.

  • Q: How do I buy the Mysterious Benefactor's pass?

    A:
    • Launch Crusaders of the Lost Idols.
    • Navigate to the current season's dialog.
    • Click on the purchase button.
    • Benefit!

  • Q: What if I buy the Mysterious Benefactor's pass late in the season?

A: You will receive all of the rewards up to your current level, retroactively, and you can claim them at any time after you've purchased the pass.

  • Q: What happens when the season ends?

A: All the rewards you haven't claimed yet will be auto-claimed.

If you are currently on a dungeon objective that would get you points for the season, those points will be applied to the new season once you reset that objective.

COTLI: Emo's New Moon 5

The entity stood before them on four legs, a malignant hulk of flesh and skulls and candles. It had no eyes. It had too many teeth. Yet despite its gruesome appearance, the Crusaders found themselves strangely comforted by its presence. The Evanescent welcomed the Crusaders like a shepherd would their flock, ready take them on a journey into the beyond.

"Come with us," spoke The Evanescent, its mouth filled with row after row of jagged teeth. "We will show you the way..."

The skies have darkened and Emo's New Moon has risen once again. For our second Tier 5 Event, we welcome a new and truly otherworldly new Crusader. Are you ready to journey across the veil with this eldritch monstrosity?

Emo's New Moon 5 runs until Tuesday, November 5th at 12PM PST, introducing The Evanescent and bringing back Wendy the Witch, Jack O'Lantern, Henry, the Scaredy-Ghoul, Fright-o-Tron 4000, Viktor the Vampire, and Trixie the Treater!

New Tier 5 Crusader: The Evanescent

Stories tell of beings that escort souls from one existence to another. The Evanescent is one such being, an entity tied to the entropy and transition of all things into... what comes next.

When it comes to your formations, The Evanescent brings something unique to Slot 22. They use The Great Equalizer to grant the base tags of each Crusaders in The Evanescent's column to each other Crusader in the column. For example, if you have Zoraeban, Demonic Angel in your column along with The Evanescent, every Crusader in that column will be an Angel and a Demon in addition to their other base tags.

Vanitas, Bring Me to Life, and Memento Mori each offer more straightforward Global DPS buffs. Candle in the Window buffs Crusaders behind The Evanescent in the formation for each Enchantment Point (EP) from heroes not in the formation, while Until the Mourning increases the potency of the buff. Finally, Samhain increases Global DPS for each unique tag in the formation.

The Evanescent awaits all things. After all, we all die eventually...

New Tier 5 Objectives

  • Recruit The Evanescent | The Evanescent takes up a slot in the formation and disables the DPS and upgrades of adjacent Crusaders with the Support tag. Reach area 400 with the new difficulty scaling.

  • Rest in Pieces | Only Angels, Demons, and Undead Crusaders - along with Trixie the Treater - may be used. Reach area 450.

  • Dreams on Yew Street | Special Freddie monsters have a chance to spawn with each wave of monsters. The Freddies will take out the DPS and upgrades of a Crusader, one Crusader per Freddie on screen. The Freddies disappear when they hit the formation. Reach area 475.

  • The Henry Spooky Photo Show | Henry, the Scaredy-Ghoul begins in your formation, and cannot be moved or swapped out. Other Crusaders do no DPS. Riff Raff and Magenta also occupy slots in the formation, changing to different slots every 100 areas. Reach area 500.

  • Halloween Potluck | Wendy the Witch starts in your formation and cannot be moved or swapped out. Damage done to monsters is based on the lowest DPS Crusader in your formation. Trick or Treat Monsters have returned. Each area has double the number of enemies or bosses. Finally, enemies drop less gold and quest items, and the requirements to pass an area are doubled. Reach area 525.

Help! Where’s the Loot?

Equipment for event Crusaders can be found in Silver and Jeweled Halloween Chests, which you can earn from objectives and the free play or buy in the shop. Each non-recruitment objective will drop a chest for its given tier of Crusaders, and free play will drop All Tier chests. Gear for Tier 2, Tier 3, Tier 4 and Tier 5 Crusaders will only appear in All Tier chests once you've unlocked the respective Crusaders. You can select the tier of chest you buy in the shop when you go to purchase chests with real money or event currency.

What About Older Event Crusaders?

COTLI: Carnival of Sorrows 5!

Come one, come all and step right up! That's right! No mirrors, no tricks! It's just magic!

The fifth edition of the Carnival of Sorrows event is now live, and adds a magic show to its attractions!

This is also our first Tier 5 event! Read on for more details about what's new for this year of events!

Carnival of Sorrows 5 runs until Tuesday, October 15th at Noon Pacific Time, and introduces conjoined twins, Carmen and Petunia!

New Tier 5 Crusader: Carmen and Petunia

Carmen and Petunia both love stage magic. Petunia's specialty is tricks with turning balls into fruits while Carmen is so good at slight of hand, you'll wonder how she did it. Finding less than stellar success advertising as just a magic act, they've embraced being conjoined twins and have been making the money ever since with their new marketing angle: conjoined magicians!

Once you've recruited Carmen and Petunia, you'll find them providing support to your formations that contain female and human Crusaders, and they'll provide their financial skills to help your gold find. They occupy seat 32 on the bench.

Crusaders Return

If you haven't collected them already, you can unlock previous Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3, and Tier 4 Crusaders by completing their respective objectives. Sashimi the Seal, Chiyome, The Half-Blood Elf, Mindy the Mime, Mister the Monkey, and Pete the Carney are all once again available to unlock!

What's New for Tier 5

Another year of events means some changes to how events work, and we hope you like them!
  • Accessing the Event | The Fourth Time's the Charm Talent now unlocks Tier 4 objectives and higher, which means it unlocks the Tier 5 objectives if you have it purchased, and it will unlock additional higher objective tiers in the future.

  • Event Idol Bonus | The buff to Idols for completing event objectives now buffs the Boss Idol drops in addition to the normal Idols you earn, though at a different rate from normal Idols.

  • Event Free Plays | Good news everyone! You can now increase the Free Play bonus for free plays on permanent campaigns by completing areas on the event free play!

  • Event Currency Costs | Since there are now 5 tiers of objectives to complete in an event period, we've lowered the cost of the objectives for Tiers 1 to 3, to help those players who are playing catch-up with an event.

  • Starting EP | Tier 5 event Crusaders will come with 450 EP when you recruit them.

  • Tier 5 Objectives | Rather than just go further and further, we're trying something different. The areas you are required to reach to complete the Tier 5 objectives are lower, but the difficulty of the monsters scales up much more quickly.

  • Bonus Skin! | The reward for completing the 5th Tier 5 event objective has been changed. Instead of awarding a Tier 5 event Jeweled chest, the reward is now a skin for one of the event Crusaders! For the Carnival of Sorrows event, the lucky Crusader getting a skin is Chiyome! This skin does not have an effect associated with it, but does make her fit in more with her fellow Carnival Crusaders when she wears it.

New Tier 5 Objectives

  • Recruit Carmen and Petunia | Carmen and Petunia occupy a slot in the formation. They reduce the effectiveness of other columns' formation abilities by 50%. Reach area 400.

  • The Prestige | A dunk tank occupies a slot in the formation and every few seconds a Crusader drowns. Reach area 450.

  • The Illusionist | A crystal ball occupies a slot in the formation and summons visions of your potential future self. Reach area 475.

  • The Carnivorous Carnival | A beast tamer occupies a slot in the formation and summons savage beasts randomly. Only the front spot of the formation can deal DPS to dispatch your enemies. Reach area 500.

  • Fortune's Fool | Some days you just spend it all on trying to win the supreme prize on a rigged carnival game. In this objective, your Idols provide no Gold bonus. Reach area 525.

Help! Where’s the Loot?

Equipment for event Crusaders can be found in Silver and Jeweled Carnival Chests, which you can earn from objectives and the free play or buy in the shop.

You'll have until Tuesday, October 15th at 12:00pm Pacific Time to complete Carnival of Sorrows 5!
